Overview
Truck bed covers can be categorized into two main types: soft covers and hard covers. Soft covers are typically made from industrial-strength vinyl or heavy-duty canvas, offering a seamless and lightweight option.
In contrast, hard covers use rigid materials like aluminum, providing enhanced security for tools and valuables. Soft covers are generally lighter and more affordable but offer less security compared to their hard cover counterparts.
Soft Top Covers
Soft covers can be further categorized into two types: roll-up covers and folding covers. Roll-up covers provide full access to the truck bed and are designed for ease of use. Typically opening from the rear and rolling up towards the front like a carpet, these covers are ideal for everyday use such as keeping groceries dry and securing basic cargo. They also allow for driving with the cover fully open, making them convenient for transporting ATVs and other recreational gear.
On the other hand, folding covers are constructed with a heavy-duty, leather-grained vinyl stretched over a framework that allows them to fold up in sections. While they are among the simplest to use and remove, folding covers usually fold into three sections, blocking the front third of the bed when in the folded position. However, if full bed access is needed, these covers can be easily removed.
Hard Covers
“There are various types of hard covers available, each offering unique features.
Hard Rolling Covers: These combine the convenience of a soft rolling cover with the security of a hard top. Operating like their soft counterparts, they feature heavy-duty aluminum slats beneath a matte black vinyl top for added reinforcement.
Hard Folding Covers: Similar to soft folding covers but with enhanced security due to their rigid surface. They offer robust protection for your cargo, supporting weights up to 600 pounds evenly distributed. Some models fold up vertically against the cab, providing full bed access while driving.
Retractable Covers: These function like rolling covers but retract into a canister within the truck bed. Made from sturdy aluminum slats gliding on ball bearings, they ensure smooth operation. While the canister occupies some bed space, retractable covers maintain the sleek truck profile and are highly secure.
One-Piece Lid Covers: Known for their seamless appearance, these lids can be color-matched to your vehicle, blending in seamlessly. They create a weather-resistant seal on all sides, effectively keeping water out. However, they only open to a 45-degree angle, limiting storage space beneath the bed rail. Their sharp look makes them popular on show trucks and ideal for those needing superior security and water resistance.”
